Reflexology

Could reflexology help me?

Everyone may benefit from reflexology - women, men, children and the elderly.

Reflexology may be effective for many conditions including:

  • Joint pain
  • Breathing disorders
  • Digestive problems
  • Fertility issues
  • Headaches / migraines
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Pain relief
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stress and stress-related conditions

Reflexology may help relieve congestion, aid circulation, relax muscles, calm over activity in any part of the body and stimulate under activity. It may improve cooperation and coordination between the bodily systems. It is a gentle therapy that aims to encourage the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

How does reflexology work?

Reflexologists believe that the feet mirror the body. All organs, systems and glands of the body can be mapped onto areas of the feet called reflex points. A reflexologist knows how to stimulate the reflex points in order to bring about a response in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is based on the ancient Chinese theory that energy is flowing all around our bodies. If the energy can flow freely then we are balanced and healthy. If the energy is obstructed, illness may result.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy

Reflexology works along holistic principles aiming to treat your mind, body and spirit rather than a diagnosis or set of symptoms. For instance, if you are suffering from stress, your body may be affected as well as your mind. Similarly, a physical illness can be emotionally draining. Reflexology aims to rebalance the whole of your being and so may be more effective than working directly on one part of you.

What does a reflexologist feel during treatments?

A qualified reflexologist believes they can feel crystal deposits on the feet and hands which could indicate areas of sluggish energy flow. A reflexologist would work these areas with the intention to break down the deposits and restore energy flow thus enabling the body to get rid of toxic waste products and heal itself.

What are the benefits of reflexology ?

Research has shown the specific techniques of reflexology to be effective and beneficial in many ways. A survey of 170 reflexology studies from 21 countries shows that reflexology is effective, impacting a variety of physical and psychological concerns.

Reflexology:

  • Creates relaxation: From the moment the reflexologist's hands start their work, the relaxation begins as shown in research using EEG brain activity. All together, 24 studies demonstrate reflexology's relaxation effect.
  • Reduces pain: Pain reduction following reflexology work is documented in 27 studies including research showing impact on individuals of all ages and health states
  • Ameliorates health concerns: Research shows that reflexology work helps indiviuals of all ages with some 78 health concerns ranging from aggressive behavior Êin children to urinary concerns of the elderly.
  • Improves blood flow: Separate studies show that reflexology work increases blood flow to the feet, brain, kidneys and intestines
  • Aids post-operative recovery: Reflexology work aids recovery after surgery as shown by several studies, reducing pain and lessening the use of post operative analgesics
  • Impact on physiological measures (e. g. blood pressure and cholesterol; measurements by ECG, EEG, and FMRI)
  • Enhances medical care: Reflexology helps where nothing else can for many: phantom limb pain sufferers, neuropathy patients, and haemodialysis patients to name a few
  • Benefits mental health: Research demonstrates that reflexology can reduce depression (11 studies) and anxiety (9 studies)
  • Complements cancer care: Pain, nausea, vomiting, and/or anxiety eased for chemotherapy patients following reflexology work as shown by 16 studies from 7 countries
  • Eases pregnancy, delivery and post-partum effects: Women who received reflexology experienced shorter labour times and used less analgesia. In addition, reflexology showed a positive impact on postpartum depression, anxiety, urination and bowel movements

In general terms, the benefits of reflexology have to do with the reduction of stress. Because the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body, they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium.

Reflexology is a complement to standard medical care. It should not be construed as medical advice. It should not be a replacement to medical help. Please use it wisely. We care about your safety.
